Does Your Sleeping Position Affect Your General Health?

Having a good night’s sleep is the best way to feel energized and ready in the morning. However, there are times when people feel tired and in pain even after a deep eight-hour sleep. Among many other possible factors, one common reason behind discomfort and aches in the morning can be your sleeping position. The way you sleep affects various parts of your body differently. You must understand how a particular sleeping position can affect your health, internally and externally, before deciding which is the best one for you.

  • Sleeping on the side

Sleeping on the side is one of the most preferred ways of sleeping. The position has a lot of health benefits, especially if you sleep on the left side. The arrangement of our internal organs, including the stomach and heart, is such that sleeping on the left side promotes digestion and reduces heartburn. It has also been proven to be better for your brain and blood flow in the body. However, if one does not care about keeping their body aligned and choosing the right mattress and pillow, they can suffer from shoulder pain. Furthermore, sleeping on the side can cause wrinkles on the face.

  • Foetal position

Foetal position is a variation of sleeping on the side added with a downfall. The curving of the back can cause back pain and puts pressure on your stomach.

  • Sleeping on the back

Sleeping on the back has been called the most natural way to sleep, as it lets your spine straighten itself. It relaxes your body, as there is no pressure put on one particular point, such as shoulders or arms. It can help with back problems and headaches as well. However, the position is not recommended for people who have sleep apnoea. Today, there are snoring aids available to help you with the issue if you are used to sleeping on your back.

  • Sleeping on the stomach

The position is not common and for a good reason. It can put stress on your neck and spine, causing discomfort as you wake up in the morning. It can help with snoring, but the numerous disadvantages of the position overrule the benefits. People also find that if they sleep on their stomach, they feel anxious in the morning. It causes lower-back pains as the spine is forced to straighten at an unnatural position.

If you find that you cannot change your sleeping position and want to sleep on the stomach, it is advisable to sleep without a pillow. Instead, place the pillow below your pelvis to provide the spine with its natural curve.

Your body speaks to you with pains and discomfort when it is not completely healthy. Doctors advise special sleeping positions for pregnant women and those who go through chronic pain for better comfort. Your choice of mattress also plays an essential role in providing comfort in each sleeping position. Ensure that you take a proper consultation with your doctor before you modify your sleeping position to get a better insight into its effects on your body and health.
